Keith Mesecher of First Church writes: "The Reverend Michael Dowd started
me on this journey 2-1/2 years ago when he preached at First UU Church and lit
a fire. Since he was here I have been intensely following up on the leads he
gave me at that time for advancing my knowledge of the evolution of the earth
and the universe and our role in it, including reading his just released book,
'Thank God For Evolution! How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform
Your Life and Our World.' We started Cosmos about 7 months ago and are now delighted
to bring Michael Dowd and his wife, scientist Connie Barlow, to San Diego for
the Evolutionary Revival and a series of other events as well."

| Valentine's
Day. Jan Garbosky, board vice president at First Church and
Marriage Equality Leadership Team Representative for the
San Diego UU Cluster, urges that the following information
be passed on to all supporters who might be able to attend:
Faith
leaders and the San Diego Chapter of Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA) will hold an interfaith prayer, and request
marriage licenses for local same-sex couples tomorrow (Thursday)
at the San Diego County Clerk's Office, 1600 Pacific Highway,
between 7:45 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
From Len Pellettieri of First UU
Church: “If you haven't heard of the book
'Three Cups of Tea' by David Relin, you will. It's the KPBS/San
Diego Public Library's choice for the San Diego Reads campaign
going on. It's the true story of a hero, American Greg Mortenson,
who has built 66 schools for girls and boys in the remote
mountains of Pakistan - and now Afghanistan. At an open-to-the-public
meeting at the Old Globe on Jan. 28, Relin showed slides
and told the story to a packed house. Very inspirational.”
The
audience was moved to ask, “What can we do to help?” One
of the answers was, Buy and read the book; then pass it
on.”
On
Monday, Feb. 18, Greg will speak at the University of San
Diego's Joan Kroc Peace and Justice Institute at 6 p.m.
Call (619) 260-5821 for more information. On Tuesday, Feb.
19, at 11:15 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. he'll speak at San Diego
City College. Call (619) 388- 3554. On Feb. 20, he'll be
at Camp Pendleton. Call (760) 899-2105.

Intern
Minister. Chalice Intern Minister David
Miller delivered
his last sermon at Chalice on Jan. 13 and officially
ended his internship there. From the Chalice newsletter: "David,
we hope you received from us as much as we received from
you. Your wisdom, enthusiasm and gifts greatly enriched our
congregation. We are really going to miss you!" Incidentally,
Chalice recently topped the 200 member mark. And Pacific
Southwest District Executive Ken Brown last month led a workshop
on dealing with growth pains for more than 30 Chalice leaders
because "it's getting very difficult to handle space
issues," says Outreach Chair Rob Molek.
