Festive
Launch. The Berkeley (photo) along the Embarcadero was the
scene last Saturday night for a gala dinner signaling
the launch of the 2008 First Church combined campaign.
Members started arriving before 5 p.m. and were treated
to a magnificent sunset while enjoying a champagne toast.
It
was hard to beat the enthusiasm. Of the $3.5 million to
$3.7
million needed for the Bard Hall project, about 60
percent has already been raised in the form of pledges and
gifts. During the after-dinner program, members heard from
Rev. Dr. Arvid Straube, lead minister of First Church; Kay
Chandler and Everett Howe, co-chairs of the Combined Annual
and Capital Campaigns, and members John Holl and Ed
Law. The warm up music came from Drew
Massicot on the piano and
vocalist Melanie Davis. The song? “Hope.” Later, the JUUL Tones entertained.
The
joint campaign will focus on the annual budget and the
rebuilding
of Bard Hall, which after more than 50 years “is
overcrowded and run down. The bathrooms are too small and
unreliable, the kitchen does not support our needs, there
are too few classrooms, and every week we are yet again in
search of a place to meet.”
The
evening wrapped up when the “tireless dancers left
at 10.” |
