Still
Searching. Of all the candidates
who applied, the Ministerial Search Committee at UU Fellowship
of San Dieguito (photo, right) in Solana Beach felt it
had found the three best. However, in a recent letter to
Members
and Friends, Diane
Masser-Frye, chair of the Search Committee, explained
why the Committee “will not be presenting a candidate
for settled minister this spring, as we had hoped.”
The first minister withdrew shortly after visiting, believing
it was not a good fit. The Committee felt the same way. The
second minister decided to go to a congregation twice the
size of UUFSD where there were other opportunities. And while
the third minister was discussed at length, the Committee
determined it would not be good fit.
“We,
the Search Committee, are committed to finding UUFSD a
minister who is a good match,” wrote Diane for
the entire Committee. “We did not want to 'settle'—to
present someone who wasn't quite right, just because the
congregation was expecting it. We decided it was better to
present no candidate, rather than present the wrong candidate.”
“We
wanted someone who will stay with us for the long haul,” continued
Diane in her letter. “We wanted someone who would lead this
congregation and help us to grow—not
just in numbers—but in spirit and in community. We did not
find that someone. But we know we will.” |

Ahead. In his Ministerial Musings column, Rev.
Tom Owen-Towle, interim minister
of UU Fellowship of San Dieguito, notes that, “The
morale and momentum of the Fellowship remain
strong” despite the Ministerial Search Committee's
decision not to present a candidate for settled minister
at this time
(see Feature article above). “This is a time of disappointment,
to be sure, but not devastation.”
In his column appearing
in the April issue of the Fellowship's newsletter, he writes:
“Our vitality is palpable; you can feel it every Sunday.
Together, pulpit and pew, we will continue to create and
sustain the
kind of beloved community of which we can all be proud.” Although
Rev. Owen-Towle was to leave this summer, he will remain
while the Ministerial Search Committee continues its work.
