Same sex wedding ceremony.Wedding Ceremony. The LGBTQ Pride Center sponsored a demonstration wedding (photo) on March 25 at California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) in the Library courtyard. Following a short demonstration of how gays and lesbians are refused marriage permits, the formal demonstration wedding was held with music, a procession, a short sermon, exchanging of rings and vows, and finally a wedding reception.

Rev. Margo McKenna of Chalice UU Congregation presided over the wedding and gave a stirring message to the LGBTQ community. There were more than 125 attending and the courtyard was filled with music and flowers. It was a beautiful, inspiring experience for everyone and Margo gave an outstanding introduction to the wedding vows.

A ribbon cutting for the new LGBTQ Pride Center at CSUSM was held on April 8. The Center is led by Rodger D'Andreas. Before the ribbon cutting, Rob Molek from Chalice UU, a member of the CIAO (San Diego Cluster Inreach and Outreach) Board and Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson of Palomar UU Fellowship presented the Center with a $250.00 check for the nonprofit Pride Center.

Bryce Manning, one of the co-presidents of the LGBTQ student group, cut the ribbon. The Pride Center will provide consulting services, print resources, and events for LGBTQ students on campus.

Worship Service. Rev. Kathleen Owens of First UU Church and Rev. Kathleen Green of Summit UU Fellowship will join two other UU ministers "new to the District" in leading the Worship Service on Saturday, April 26, during District Assembly. The others are Rev. Ann Schranz of Monte Vista UU Congregation in Montclair, Calif., and Rev. Gail Collins-Ranadive of UU Congregation of Las Vegas, Nev. “We four are 'new to the District' clergy this year and the DA tradition is to have such clergy lead the worship on Saturday morning,” says Rev. Green.

Official Opening. Here's a report from Rob Molek of Chalice UU Congregation about the Grand Opening Dinner and Celebration which he and other UUs attended last Friday night for the LGBTQ Pride Center at Cal State University San Marcos:

“There were 19 people from Chalice and Palomar at the dinner. There were two tables set aside for us. During the recognition time, (Center leader) Rodger (D'Andreas) talked about the tables purchased by different departments, including extended learning, education, student services, etc. Then he talked about how important it is for students to know that off campus there was support in the community. He then made a big point that UU congregations was the only group to purchase two tables. We received a rousing ovation from everyone.”

“The entertainment was somewhat 'flamboyant', including a speaker who interviewed LGBTQ allies and LGBTQ students and staff. There were three female impersonators that lipsinked to music, a lesbian soliloquy speaker, and a white Jewish lesbian rapper. What a variety!”

“The event demonstrated the enthusiastic support for LGBTQ issues both on and off campus.”

In Sunday's North County Times there was a large article with a photo about the LGBTQ Pride Center. There was one section of it that talked about Chalice and Palomar UU as welcoming churches for the LGBTQ community.
