Marriott Del MarDA Is Here. Hundreds of UUs from Arizona, southern Nevada and Southern California will be in San Diego this weekend attending District Assembly at the Marriott Del Mar (above photo).

The annual Pacific Southwest District event kicks off Friday afternoon with registration, followed that night by the Banner Parade, an opening Celebration, and a keynote address by Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell, senior minister of First Unitarian Church in Portland, Oregon.

On Saturday morning, Rev. Kathleen Green of Summit UU Fellowship and Rev. Kathleen Owens of First UU Church join other UU ministers in leading the Worship Service. Saturday is filled with workshops and events, capped off with a banquet, entertainment and awards.

The Worship Service on Sunday morning at 11 features joint choirs and drummers from Chalice UU Congregation, Palomar UU Fellowship and UU Fellowship of San Dieguito. Rev. Dr. Beth Johnson of Palomar and Rev. Tom Owen-Towle of San Dieguito will be preaching on the District Assembly theme of “Weaving the Tapestry of the Beloved Community.”

The Service Project for DA is San Diego Food Not Lawns. Please be sure to visit its booth to learn more about this organization and, if you like, to make a donation. There will be another opportunity to donate to SDFNL during the Sunday service.

Also, during DA you will have an opportunity to visit the display area where vendors will offer a variety of items.

District Assembly concludes on Sunday afternoon. For more information about DA go to the PSWD website.

Breaking News

Philippine UUs. The following article was written by Len Pellettieri, a member of First UU Church of San Diego who chairs the Philippine Partner Church Committee.

“From March 2 to 15, five pioneers from First Church toured Manila and the island of Negros, visiting seven of the 27 UU churches in the Philippines, including our sister-church, Malingin. It was a whirlwind Peace-Corps-type pilgrimage. We planted seeds for several substantial projects such as: a safe electrical system for a village, plans for production of a Ready To Use Food (think vitamin-enriched peanut butter), technical help with a coastal-erosion problem, and a collaboration between our headquarters and the main public library in Dumaguete to install a ten-carrel computer room.”

“And that's not even mentioning the presents, inspiration, faith and love we exchanged with the scores of friendly people we met.”

“We even visited the grave of Rev. Toribio S. Quimada. Who was he? How did he come to be a UU? How and why was he eventually shot and burned to death in his own home? We're continuing to work on these and other projects, and intend to report to the congregation (and San Diego Cluster) in detail, with photos and answers to your questions, probably in June.”

In addition to Len, the four from First Church who visited the Philippines were: Rev. Carolyn Owen- Towle, Kathleen MacLeod, Lisa Hartman, and Len's wife, Mary Rose. Len is also a member of the San Diego Cluster's Inreach and Outreach board or CIAO.
