Up Close.
Everette Howe (however@alumni.caltech.edu) is President of
First UU Church of San Diego in Hillcrest.
Early years. Born and raised in Sacramento, California.
How
long a UU. Raised unchurched. I guess you would say that my
parents were quiet humanists so I might qualify as one of
those who was
a UU without knowing it. My wife Bella and I started attending
services at First UU San Diego in 2005, and we became members
in March 2006.
Education. I'm a mathematician, with a B.S. from Caltech (1986) and a
Ph.D. from U.C. Berkeley (1993).
Career. After getting my Ph.D., I spent three years as an assistant
professor at the University of Michigan. In 1996 I left
Michigan and started
my current job at the Center for Communications Research,
a “think
tank” where I work on mathematical problems for the
U.S. Government.
Dinner guests. Andrew Sullivan, Laurie Anderson,
Barack Obama.
Interests. Reading, yoga, walking, photography,
book-binding; Keys to UU growth in SD County. Outreach, activism,
and collaboration with other religious organizations.

you know an interesting UU in San Diego County you'd

Breaking News |
New
Beginning. Today marks the start of Dr.
Frank Willey's one-year
term as Consulting Minister
of Summit UU Fellowship in Santee. “A
Consulting Minister role can have a somewhat more general focus
than Interim
Minister.
At Summit I will be working with the Directors, Staff and a
Ministry Advisory Team to keep Summit strong and growing until
it finds a new settled minister. Formerly, I served in this
capacity both at Coronado UU Fellowship and UU
Fellowship of San Dieguito.” His first sermon
will be this Sunday (September 5) titled, “Hello...Goodbye...Hello!”
Welcome.
Miles Beauchamp, President of Summit, wrote the following to
members and friends: "This week, with the
coming of Dr. Frank Willey, we mark the beginning of an exciting
new chapter in our congregation's life together. We have
much to look forward to, much to accomplish, and so much
to carry on. I want to officially welcome and introduce him
to you, and invite you to get to know him."
First Sermon. On Sunday,
September 11, Rev.
Thomas Anastasi will deliver
his first sermon as Interim Minister at Chalice
UU Congregation in Escondido. It's titled, “Gathering
the Waters.” “I am very happy to be among our
good UU colleagues here in the Pacific Southwest District,” says
Rev. Anastasi. “I am serving the Chalice UU Congregation for
one year as their Interim Minister. I hope I can connect
with others here. I want to attend any UUMA gatherings, and
have already registered for the September gathering. I have
also been added to the PSWD list serve. Again, I am happy
to be here.”
Upcoming. In future issues of the Cluster
newsletter, we'll feature profiles of both Dr. Willey and
Rev. Anastasi. During
the coming year, we'll also include periodic updates of the
Settled Minister searches at Summit and Chalice. |
