Mike Hampson, the
San Diego County Cluster webmaster, recently returned from
a trip to the Philippines. Even though he covered
a lot of territory, he wasn't able to visit the churches with
which First Church in Hillcrest has a partnership. Maybe the
next time. (Click on the photo to the right, for more photos
of Mike's trip.)
Write-A-Thon. Every year Amnesty
International sponsors an event in December
called the Write-A-Thon which marks the anniversary of International
Human Rights Day. The event only
requires a pen to make a difference in the lives of prisoners
of conscience, human rights defenders,
victims of torture and other individuals at risk. Using the
proven power of writing letters, Amnesty International members
and others
write letters to pressure authorities to release those who
have been unjustly imprisoned and to stop the torture and abuse
of
others.
The Write-A-Thon will be this Saturday (December 5) at the Borders Bookstore in Parkway Plaza in El Cajon from noon until 3 p.m.
The event is free but donations are accepted for the postage.
The Social Action Committee at Summit
UU Fellowship in Santee
helps to sponsor some of the work of Amnesty International in
East County and hosts all of the meetings.

Giving
Thanks. At the Unitarian Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Rev.
Danny Reed and the congregation recently
shared
the following Responsive Reading (portions only) by Max Coots:
“Let us give thanks...For continuous friends, who, like
scallions
and cucumbers keep reminding us that we've had them; For
crotchety friends, as sour as rhubarb and as indestructible;
For handsome friends, who are as gorgeous as eggplants, and
as elegant as a row of corn, and the others, as plain as
potatoes and so good for you; For funny friends, who are
as silly as Brussels sprouts and as amusing as Jerusalem
artichokes, and serious friends, as complex as cauliflowers
and as intricate as onions...” |
