Flagstaff, Arizona live cam showing snow.Photo. The middle of the country is being belted with fierce winter storms while San Diego County experiences chilly days and nights (and some snow in the mountains) as we head into the holiday season. Click on the above photo for a larger photo.

Holiday Season. During the holidays, we'll share stories of how UUs in San Diego County are helping those less fortunate.

At Palomar UU Fellowship in Vista, members are collecting gifts for local children and putting them under The Giving Tree. They're also collecting presents for children hospitalized at Rady's Children's Hospital and household items for a woman and her children who are transitioning to their own home from the Women's Resource Center Shelter.

Summit UU Fellowship in Santee is sponsoring two families—each with four members—through Crisis House. Summit's Social Action Committee has an Adopt a Family Tree in the Greeting Room decorated with ornament tags indicating a person's name, age and wish.

UU Fellowship of San Dieguito is participating (spearheaded by the Social Action Committee) in the Community Resource Center's 2009 Holiday Basket Program at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Sunday Service themes for December are Peace (First UU Church in Hillcrest) and Grace (Summit UU Fellowship).

Breaking News

Musical Treat. The Youth Choir Concert & Youth Talent Showcase is set for this Friday (December 11) beginning at 8 p.m. at First Church in Hillcrest. There's a suggested donation of $10 with proceeds benefiting the Youth Choir and Youth Programs. For more information, contact (619) 298-9978 or www.firstuusandiego.org.

Shopping Online. First Church has opened an online store to purchase all sorts of merchandise—from mugs to aprons—with the church logo. A portion of the sales supports church programs. Check out their Cafe Press Store.

Chalice Sings. Cabaret at Chalice UU Congregation in Escondido was not only a musical hit but a financial one as well. The event raised $5,600.00 for the operating budget and about $1,445.00 for the music long range fund. The Arts & Crafts Faire netted about $860.00 for the operating budget. Congratulations!

National Media. Last Sunday, The New York Times Travel Section featured a glowing article about North Park titled, Pulsing With Eclec-tricity”. “The elegant North Park Theatre,” journalist Jamie Brisick wrote, “a neighborhood jewel built in 1928, shut down in the '70s; the marquee became an area eyesore.”

Vermont Marriage. Two weeks ago, the Weddings/Celebrations section in The New York Times featured a couple (Maria Jean Trumpler and Kathryn Marie Dudley) who were married by the Rev. Johanna Nichols at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Middlebury, Vermont. Maria Jean is director of the Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies at Yale. Despite many weddings/celebrations featured in The Times every Sunday, it's not often that you come across a UU minister performing the ceremony.
