Music
and arts—in their infinite variety and forms—have long
been close
to the hearts of Unitarian Universalists for their ability to express
the depths of human emotion and spiritual connection.
We
are happy to say that arts of all media play a significant
role in the
life of all our San Diego County UU congregations.
You are
cordially welcomed to attend the concerts, art workshops and other
special
events offered at many of our churches and fellowships. Keep abreast
of these activities by visiting the in the web site of each UU
church in San Diego.
Of
course, if you are an artist of any expression—musician,
painter,
sculptor, graphic designer, photographer, actor, singer, dancer,
clown, comedian, magician, juggler, unicyclist—we
hope you will consider sharing your gifts. This page outlines some
of
the opportunities
that
currently
exist. Please contact those listed below to get involved, or to
suggest a new and
exciting arts possibility. |

First
UU Churchs music program includes
an adult choir, two childrens
choirs (ages 4-8 and 9-14),
and the Joyful Noise instrumental/vocal
ensemble. Each group contributes regularly to our two
Sunday morning worship services (9 a.m. and 11 a.m.), where music
plays a significant role.
Additionally, the adult choir presents
two major choral works each year: a Service of Music in December
and a performance in May, as part of the First UU Concert Series.
The
program is guided by Ken
Herman, our Church Organist and Director
of Music, in cooperation with Adult Choir Director Dan
Ratelle, Children & Youth Choir Director Andrea
Newall, and the Music Committee.
About
Our Concert Series:
Since 1978, the Music Committee of First UU Church has sponsored
the Concert Series as an extension of cultural outreach to the community.
We present monthly concerts from September to June, featuring a
wide variety of musical traditions and styles in a chamber music
setting.
Unitarian Universalists believe in a Living Tradition that
includes the “direct experience of that transcending mystery
and wonder, affirmed in all cultures.” It is the Music Committee's
firm conviction that the lively arts open us to that mystery and
wonder.

Music
is an important part of our Sunday service, with plenty
of singing
by the congregation and our choir. A typical service
includes a prelude, two hymns and a postlude. Instrumental soloists
frequently perform at our services, sharing their talent on the
piano, banjo, guitar, flute and other instruments.
|
 |
| The
choir welcomes experienced singers and novices alike. If
you love to sing and can make a commitment to come for rehearsals
and be present when the choir sings—the choir would love to have
you join them. Come to any of the Thursday evening rehearsals from
7 p.m. to 9 p.m. As of August 15th, you can to talk with
our new
Music Director, Christine Lehman. The choir has about 30
members, some of
whom are
long-time
members
and others
who are newcomers.
