Music & Concerts
The San Diego UU Network sponsored and promoted a number of musical events each year highlighting the musical talents of our local UU members, as well as musicians from San Diego and across the country. All of these events featured music that promoted and affirmed UU principles, which included a focus on social justice, compassion in human relations, and support of spiritual growth, along with an appreciation for the interdependent web of life.

In June 2012, the combined choirs and musicians from all five San Diego UU congregations presented “Sources: A Unitarian Universalist Cantata.” This choral work in seven movements featured music by Jason Shelton, Associate Minister for Music at the First UU Church in Nashville, Tennessee, and lyrics by Kendyl Gibbons, Minister at All Souls UU Church, Kansas City. The San Diego production was under the musical direction of Tim McKnight, Director of Music, Chalice UU. The “Sources” cantata takes its inspiration from the six sources of Unitarian Universalism, which include the teachings of many different religious and spiritual traditions.

Beginning in 2014, SUUN has featured UU musicians from around San Diego at our annual summer celebration called “Taste of UU – Food & Music Festival”. This is an opportunity for UUs from across the county to visit together, while enjoying great food and live music from a number of our local UU bands and singing groups, including Chalice's Grunnion Run and First UU’s JUUL Tones. We have also sponsored local UU musicians at other musical events. These have included a concert by the Jackie Austin-Singer Project at UUFSD in July 2014. Jackie is the Director of Religious Education at Chalice UU in Escondido. And SUUN is co-sponsoring “Cabaret & Cabernet” at UUFSD in November 2015 featuring the considerable musical talents of Christ Hassett and Drew Massicot (view a video). Both are members of First UU.
![]() In addition to sponsoring musical events with local UU musicians, we also organize events featuring the inspiring, uplifting, and energizing music of well-known musicians from around the country. These have included Holly Near, Emma’s Revolution, Peter Mayer, and Karen Drucker. And SUUN will be co-sponsoring a concert with Carrie Newcomer at UUFSD in February 2016.

You can learn more about upcoming musical events sponsored by SUUN on our Calendar. Please join us, invite your friends, and help us spread the word about all this great music that both delights and uplifts the spirit.
