Founders Hall was filled with the positive energy of heart-lifting sound on Saturday, January 20th as we enjoyed the music of singer-songwriter-poet Carrie Newcomer, accompanied pianist Gary Walters. After the Women’s March that morning, Carrie’s song “If Not Now, Tell Me When,” seemed especially timely. And we all joined in to sing her “Room at the Table” that speaks so clearly to our UU principles. Many commented effusively about the concert … using descriptive words like “splendid concert,” “a great duo,” “excellent show … in every way.” Others mentioned being inspired and uplifted. And our “spoken word” and poetry fans loved Carrie reading from her books of poetry and musings. Thanks to all who reached out through your social networks to encourage concert attendance. The majority of folks attending (3 out every 4) were not Fellowship members, so it turns out that our concerts are a great way to reach out to our community.
Did you know that UU congregations directly fund the work of other community organizations? Every week at the Sunday service an offering is accepted with the proceeds being distributed in various ways. One of those ways is to go directly to community organizations who have demonstrated a high degree of legitimacy and effectiveness. This article is the first in a series sharing the stories of these community partners. On 1/28/18 UUFSD is supporting Public Watchdogs with it's Generosity Sunday. From the organizer: "Public Watchdogs is a California nonprofit. We are working to prevent the burial of deadly radioactive nuclear waste at San Onofre State Beach Park. We are the only organization that has an active lawsuit to stop the burial on behalf of the Public. Your tax-deductible donation provides the support we need to pay legal expenses, attend meetings, monitor government agencies, conduct research, and provide public outreach. It also funds travel, equipment costs, and staff time to protect your interests, and to monitor and publicly expose malfeasance and corruption. You can learn more about us at www.publicwatchdogs.org." Please join us any Sunday and check the order of service to see if your donation is going to one of these worthy groups. The good we do is amplified by every donation and reaches far wider than just our UU congregations! Just imagine . . .
