As you may already know, Councilmember Georgette Gómez has introduced a resolution in opposition to Executive Order 13767, to build a wall along the United States border with Mexico and U.S. House of Representatives Bill H.R. 1813 Titled Border Wall Funding Act of 2017. Councilmember Gómez believes that San Diego is a city that benefits economically and culturally from the binational bond we have with Mexico and the contributions of immigrants.  It is incumbent on us to protect such bonds by resisting moves to further divide us. We are asking for your public support on this resolution. Please join us at the San Diego City Councilwww.uusandiego.org/blog/get-your-standing-on-the-side-of-love-t-shirt meeting where the resolution will be discussed for full council consideration. This is a great opportunity to wear your Standing on the Side of Love t-shirts!

Contribute to the Emergency Fund for DACA Renewals

9/1/2017

The White House recently ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allowed young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children to gain temporary legal status, work, and attend college. With the program’s termination, these protections disappear and DACA youth will be subject to deportation once their authorization expires.
Some DACA holders are eligible to extend their protected status for another two years, but they MUST complete their renewal application before October 5. The US Customs and Immigration Service (USCIS) charges a $495 application fee for each renewal application—a huge burden for low-income families, especially on such short notice. So, for the next three weeks, First UU is joining with our longtime partner Alliance San Diego to help DACA families cover this cost and meet the October deadline.
You can contribute to this effort in one of two ways:
  1. Donate through First Church: Make your payment to First UU San Diego, and put “DACA Fund” in the memo line of your check or in the “Comment” field of your online payment. 100% of the money donated to the DACA fund at First UU will be passed through to Alliance San Diego. Donations must be received no later than October 1; or
  2. Donate directly to Alliance San Diego’s DACA Renewal Fund: Contributions can be made through the Alliance San Diego website https://alliancesd.nationbuilder.com/daca_renewal_fund. Alliance staff will write checks directly to USCIS on behalf of renewal applicants needing financial assistance whose applications have been reviewed by Alliance’s legal experts.
Either way, your donation is tax-deductible. Thank you for your support of DACA recipients and their families in this difficult time.
