The Third Annual Women’s Chorus Concert to benefit the women supported by Women’s Empowerment International, WE PERSIST!, will take place on Saturday, May 19 at 7:00 pm in the Meeting House, followed by a wine and dessert reception in Bard Hall at 8:00 pm. This year, the Chorus is honored to be joined by Congolese singer Matrida David and members of her Umoja Band. Matrida, driven from her homeland by war, grew up in the Nyarugusu refugee camp in Tanzania. She started singing and performing gospel music at age 7. By the time she was 17, she was the leader of the refugee camp’s 100-member church choir, writing music and performing both at the camp and around the country.

The February Generosity Offering at First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego's Hillcrest campus will go to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir of San Diego. This all-volunteer choir is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Since 1997 the MLK Choir has been performing gospel concerts to raise funds for educational grants to give to San Diego County high school seniors pursuing a college degree in visual or performing arts. Their inspirational and uplifting music celebrates the history of the negro spiritual with a season that runs from September through June. This year marks their 20th anniversary of awarding grants to San Diego County students who will pursue their studies in the visual and performing arts. For more information about the choir and the full concert schedule, visit the website: www.mlkccsd.org or listen online.

Carrie Newcomer Fills UUFSD with Positive Energy

1/24/2018

Founders Hall was filled with the positive energy of heart-lifting sound on Saturday, January 20th as we enjoyed the music of singer-songwriter-poet Carrie Newcomer, accompanied pianist Gary Walters. After the Women’s March that morning, Carrie’s song “If Not Now, Tell Me When,” seemed especially timely. And we all joined in to sing her “Room at the Table” that speaks so clearly to our UU principles. Many commented effusively about the concert … using descriptive words like “splendid concert,” “a great duo,” “excellent show … in every way.” Others mentioned being inspired and uplifted. And our “spoken word” and poetry fans loved Carrie reading from her books of poetry and musings. Thanks to all who reached out through your social networks to encourage concert attendance. The majority of folks attending (3 out every 4) were not Fellowship members, so it turns out that our concerts are a great way to reach out to our community.
