In order to live our faith into action in a humane and faithful response to help people in need on both sides of our border we are sharing several different ways you can plug in with our community partners to help make a difference in the lives of people. There are multiple opportunities to fit a wide range of involvement both here in San Diego and also with two organizations in Tijuana. Whether you can volunteer time or donate, your help can make a big difference. Thank you for living out our mission and helping to make San Diego a more just, fair and equitable region.

Volunteers carry out 90% of the humanitarian work of the Red Cross. There are several disaster relief operations currently operating in the US. In the wake of recent storms, the San Diego Region is recruiting individuals to deploy as shelter workers across several states. Those interested in learning more about this opportunity should contact Jane Scanlon, American Red Cross Shelter Lead. Email her at [email protected][email protected].
After many months of careful planning and diligent research, the Generosity Ministry Team at First UU Church led by Jan Garbosky has launched of their new Bed & Breakfast Program with great initial success. Whether you’re visiting beautiful San Diego or you’re a San Diegan looking to house out-of-town guests, consider the First Church Bed and Breakfast program. Church members offer reasonably-priced lodging and a continental breakfast in their homes for short-term stays (2-7 days), with all proceeds benefiting the church. (A 1-night stay may be possible by special arrangement.) A variety of accommodations are offered in several San Diego neighborhoods, including some near the city’s main attractions and/or within a few miles of the beach as well as in Chula Vista—home of our South Bay campus in campus. Our UUFSD members and others bagged 4,689 Lbs. of fresh corn-on-the-cob for those in-need at our May Food Bank Volunteer night. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE when parents bring their kids. If they learn at this age that it's important to help others, they'll remember forever...THANKS all! Email me if you'd like to join us occasionally - it's always the 1st Thursday of each month from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. ~ Sara O'Hara [email protected]. Sara Ohara, a member of UUFSD, organizes UU volunteers once monthly to do a 2-hr shift at the San Diego Food Bank and YOU are invited! Several UUs work this shift and really enjoy it. If you can't make it on 10/1/15, save the date for an upcoming night.
Join us at the San Diego Food Bank in the Miramar area; just 20 minutes from UUFSD! It’s always from 6:00 – 8:00 PM – anyone over 7 years old can help! Mostly we just put food in boxes on an assembly line or bag fresh produce – really easy, no lifting, no bending, great camaraderie. This is a wonderful way of helping locally those in need and strengthening our UUFSD community as well. The San Diego Food Bank distributes over 20 million pounds of food annually to individuals, families and a network of nonprofit organizations that work to alleviate hunger throughout San Diego county. They need our help! Email Sara Ohara TO REGISTER and for more information: [email protected]. |
