The February Generosity Offering at First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego's Hillcrest campus will go to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir of San Diego. This all-volunteer choir is a 501c3 non-profit organization. Since 1997 the MLK Choir has been performing gospel concerts to raise funds for educational grants to give to San Diego County high school seniors pursuing a college degree in visual or performing arts. Their inspirational and uplifting music celebrates the history of the negro spiritual with a season that runs from September through June. This year marks their 20th anniversary of awarding grants to San Diego County students who will pursue their studies in the visual and performing arts. For more information about the choir and the full concert schedule, visit the website: www.mlkccsd.org or listen online.

Did you know that UU congregations directly fund the work of other community organizations? Every week at the Sunday service an offering is accepted with the proceeds being distributed in various ways. One of those ways is to go directly to community organizations who have demonstrated a high degree of legitimacy and effectiveness. This article is the first in a series sharing the stories of these community partners. On 1/28/18 UUFSD is supporting Public Watchdogs with it's Generosity Sunday. From the organizer: "Public Watchdogs is a California nonprofit. We are working to prevent the burial of deadly radioactive nuclear waste at San Onofre State Beach Park. We are the only organization that has an active lawsuit to stop the burial on behalf of the Public. Your tax-deductible donation provides the support we need to pay legal expenses, attend meetings, monitor government agencies, conduct research, and provide public outreach. It also funds travel, equipment costs, and staff time to protect your interests, and to monitor and publicly expose malfeasance and corruption. You can learn more about us at www.publicwatchdogs.org." Please join us any Sunday and check the order of service to see if your donation is going to one of these worthy groups. The good we do is amplified by every donation and reaches far wider than just our UU congregations! Volunteers carry out 90% of the humanitarian work of the Red Cross. There are several disaster relief operations currently operating in the US. In the wake of recent storms, the San Diego Region is recruiting individuals to deploy as shelter workers across several states. Those interested in learning more about this opportunity should contact Jane Scanlon, American Red Cross Shelter Lead. Email her at jane.scanlon@redcross.orgjane.scanlon@redcross.org.
The White House recently ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which allowed young undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children to gain temporary legal status, work, and attend college. With the program’s termination, these protections disappear and DACA youth will be subject to deportation once their authorization expires. Some DACA holders are eligible to extend their protected status for another two years, but they MUST complete their renewal application before October 5. The US Customs and Immigration Service (USCIS) charges a $495 application fee for each renewal application—a huge burden for low-income families, especially on such short notice. So, for the next three weeks, First UU is joining with our longtime partner Alliance San Diego to help DACA families cover this cost and meet the October deadline. You can contribute to this effort in one of two ways:
By Bev Harju and the Climate Justice Team - First UU Church At the recent Community Choice Clean Energy Forum, 89 attendees enjoyed an interesting presentation and filled out 90 post cards to mail to our elected officials. We also collected $166 in donations that will go directly towards our clean energy advocacy efforts. |
